They climbed in, and Louie gawked at Tel. “Zwingy! All of a sudden you’re a tourist!”

“That doesn’t take any special talent,” Tel said. “All you need is money and bad taste.”

“And time to waste,” Caland suggested.

“True. Lots of time to waste.”

Bronlan already had the ’cab in motion. They threaded their way out to the Valley gate, at which point he proceeded to demonstrate how fast one of his remodeled vehicles could travel. The motor’s whirr became a high-pitched scream, and the bulky vehicle rocked and bounced over irregularities in the road that would have passed unnoticed at a normal speed.

“We’ll catch ’em,” Bronlan announced confidently.

“They’ve got a long start on us,” Tel said.

“Doesn’t matter. I told the driver to slow down.”

Caland pondered this unexpected announcement while the scenery flashed past. He had never thought about it, but of course the primitive Valley could not have functioned without secure communications with the modern world of Mort. The main Valley businesses—the houses of Fame, the restaurants, the transportation company—had to have telation facilities by which tourists could summon transportation and make reservations. And Bronlan, even if his transportation company had not needed it, would have contrived a workable communications network for his vehicles. Probably he built it himself from discards.

Halfway to Paradise the ’bus loomed ahead of them lumbering along slowly. Bronlan spoke curtly into a mic, and the ’bus picked up speed. They followed behind it until it pulled up in front of Pakovich’s Merc Mart. Then Bronlan passed it and swung to the curb as though to discharge a passenger.

Tel turned and watched the passengers leaving the ’bus. “He’s going into the park,” she announced. “He may be meeting someone there. Louie—you wait here and follow him if he comes back this way. I’ll see where he goes. Bar—take Cal to the hotes and wait there.”
